The Historic Uptown Susanville Association (H.U.S.A.) was formed in 1990 as a mechanism to promote and preserve the unique qualities of the Uptown Business District. H.U.S.A. sponsors special events for the whole community to enjoy.
    
  
Susanville is the second oldest town in the western Great Basin, and was established as a trading post in 1854. Lassen County was created in 1864 when Susanville won the special election for county seat by one vote. Since then, Susanville has been a major trading center, and still remains the major commerce center for the region.

Within a small area, located in uptown historic Susanville, are many of the original buildings and homes.
   
Walking around the Historic Uptown Susanville streets, anyone can see the elegant way the murals have made the city an attractive sight for travelers and local residents. The murals of Susanville not only beautify the city but tell its rich history.
    
Three of Susanville's numerous murals were recently published in a book written by Robin Dunitz and James Prigoff, who are mural historians. The book is called "Painting the Town" and shows murals all over the state of California. The three murals listed in the book were "Dad Popcorn," "Ranching," and "Creating Her History: A Tribute to the Women of Lassen County."
