In Susanville, there are
many things to do in the summer months. Memorial Park has lighted
tennis courts, a hardball field, picnic area, wading pool, rose
garden, restrooms, community event stage, concession stand and much
more. Riverside Park also has a picnic area, plus softball fields,
soccer field, horseshoe pits and a playground, as well as a Tot Lot
and restrooms. The fields are lighted.
River Street is where Little League
Park is located. Fishing and a nature walk are also available along
the Susan River.
Susanville's newest park is Susan
River Park. It can be accessed from Riverside Street and has a
trail, benches, a parking lot and handicapped access.
Susanville City Pool is available
to be rented on weekends, and has horseshoe pits, a barbecue area,
volleyball court and a picnic area.
The little town of Westwood, just
20 miles from Susanville, is host to the annual Paul Bunyan Mountain
Festival held each year on the weekend following 4th of July. The
town also boasts a 25 foot statue of Paul Bunyan carved from a
single log, standing right next to a carving of Babe the Blue Ox,
both of which originated in Westwood. The Red River Lumber Company
distributed the first recorded pictures and stories of Paul Bunyan
as part of a 30 year advertising campaign turning him into a
nationally known legend.

If you want
a piece of the Old West and if you want to know why Lassen County
retains its cowboy heritage, you'll have to come to the Susanville
Rodeo. Professional cowboys will be on hand to ensure fun for the
whole family. This is not a backwater event and no one goes away from
this event disappointed.
Be sure not to miss the
Annual Downtown Flea Market. The Flea Market is held sometime in
August in the streets of the town.
Another big
day for Westwood is the Annual Chili Cook Off. While in Westwood, be
sure to check out the local museum. It contains the rich history of
this unique logging town.
